CAHL Donates Fine Money to Blue Jackets Special Hockey Team November 16, 2011 - The Chiller Adult Hockey League (CAHL) donated $1,200 to the Blue Jackets Special Hockey Team during an awareness event Friday night at Nationwide Arena. The Blue Jackets Special Hockey Team is a member of the Columbus Chill Youth Hockey Association (CCYHA) based in Dublin, Ohio. The team provides children and adults with developmental disabilities the opportunity to play hockey in an environment adapted to each athlete's level of physical and mental ability. In partnership with the Columbus Blue Jackets and the American Special Hockey Association (ASHA), the team hosted this event to help get the word out on this great program. At the event CAHL Commissioner Martin Spanhel presented the Blue Jackets Special Needs Team a check for $1,200 collected from league fines.
These funds will help the team offset player fees and continue to develop the program. CAHL fines are collected for violations of league roster policies, game misconducts and other major infractions. All funds are periodically donated for various groups including Hockey Fights Cancer and other worthwhile organizations.
“We have a no-tolerance policy in the league for major infractions and really work to promote sportsmanship. In the heat of the games things will happen but hopefully the fines help cut down on those.

But it’s nice to turn negative events into something that can help others.” The night started with an “invitation only” skate with team members, their families, and special guests, and was followed by a game between the CCYHA Blue Jackets Special Hockey team and the Steel City Icebergs. Special guests included Blue Jackets players Marc Methot and Kristian Huselius, as well as Martin Spanhel, who in addition to his role at the Chiller played for the Blue Jackets and Syracuse Crunch from 2000-02. In addition to physical hockey skills, the program emphasizes the development of desirable individual characteristics such as dependability, self-reliance, concentration, willingness to share and personal accountability. The game of hockey is used by Special Hockey to develop within each player the characteristics that will help the player to be more successful both inside and outside a hockey environment. There are several great local hockey related charities we support or have supported and we'd encourage you to do as well if you're interested. We have promoted those groups including Hockey Beats Down Cancer, Make CF History, Columbus Ice Hockey Club, ASHA Jackets, various tournaments that offer scholarships and the Blue Jackets Foundation in the hopes the hockey community would also support them. As far as the fines, we instituted them in an effort to encourage sportsmanship and curb problems in the league. If the penalties alone were sufficient we wouldn't need to have fines. But it seems to help cut down on issues so we like the program.
From the outset we felt the only thing to do was look for areas the fine money could do some good. It seems to us turning that negative into a positive at least makes something nice come of the problems and allows the league to help others. Thanks again, Comment by Jeremy on December 21, 2011 @ 2:06 PM there should be an easy way for CAHL players and other members of the public to contribute besides just the negative connotation associated with CAHL fines.don't you agree?
