Im not very advanced with it, but from a civil view point, where yout might have to do calculations with levels of some sort after they have come out of the design progam, ive put together quite a few that perform the calculations by clicking on the numbers on long sections or plans or whatnot, and then they give you the number to place. Once you have these and a process in place, you can just hand it to the drafty and let him have at it.
Hours of work of you desk, and you have minimised the chance for human error. I used to program heavily in AutoLISP using AutoCAD. If I knew then what I know now, I would have spent more time programming in a different language than autolisp for example, VB can also integrate with AutoCAD, which is what I would most definitely have done.
The reason for this is simple. It will make it much easier for you to integrate that language into other pieces of software, like SolidWorks, Excel, word, etcetera. Having said all that, if I had to do it all over again I would have learned C# since it is the most common with just about every Windows software out there.

However, I don't know if I AutoCAD supports C#. AutoLISP was a terrible pain for me to learn, but I've written a few dozen scripts over the years. All combined, they save me literally at least an hour or two per day, sometimes more. They've also allowed the new guys working under me to rapidly pick up the ability to draw things out on their own, while keeping a consistent style across the board. I can have them doing things their first day that took me weeks to learn. Basically, I can't recommend it highly enough if AutoCAD is a big part of your job. (As I was typing this out, I went to check if there was an, and since there wasn't, I just went ahead and created one.).
